Transforming Lives After a Traumatic Injury
An adult client under our care sustained a traumatic injury in a road traffic collision, resulting in paralysis from the chest down. The injury caused complete paralysis of the muscles used for breathing and significantly affected all four limbs. Despite partial function in the hands and legs and some sensory feeling, the client requires comprehensive support for daily activities.
Crafting a Personalised Care Plan
Our team undertook a thorough assessment of the client’s physical and emotional needs, developing a bespoke care plan to support their complex condition. Collaboration with respiratory specialists was essential, as the client required ventilatory support due to compromised breathing function. Care was focused on maximising the client’s independence while providing full assistance for mobility, personal care, and activities of daily living. The team was trained in spinal injury care and respiratory management to ensure the highest standard of support.
Comprehensive Daily Support
Daily care includes respiratory monitoring, emergency support for any episodes of Autonomic Dysreflexia, manual handling to prevent pressure sores, bowel and bladder management, and assistance with mobility and personal hygiene. The team facilitates exercises to maintain the client’s remaining hand and leg function and encourages their involvement in decision-making for their care. Additionally, the care plan incorporates psychological support, given the significant impact of the client’s injury on their mental and emotional health. Regular reviews are conducted with the multidisciplinary team to assess progress and adapt the care plan as needed.
Empowering Independence and Well-being
Through dedicated and specialist care, the client’s respiratory health is managed effectively, and pressure sores have been prevented. Any episodes of Autonomic Dysreflexia have been addressed successfully, with no further hospital admissions required. They have maintained limited function in their hands and legs, enabling participation in daily tasks with some degree of autonomy. The client has reported feeling well-supported both physically and emotionally, and the tailored care provided by Harmony Healthcare has contributed to an improved quality of life despite the challenges posed by their injury.
